Low-energy cosmic rays: regulators of the dense interstellar medium

چکیده

Low energy cosmic rays (up to the GeV domain) play a crucial role in physics and chemistry of densest phase interstellar medium. Unlike ionising radiation, they can penetrate large column densities gas, reach molecular cloud cores. By maintaining there small but not negligible gas ionisation fraction, dictate coupling between plasma magnetic field, which turn affects dynamical evolution clouds impacts on process star planet formation. The cosmic-ray hydrogen also drives rich revealed by observations spectral lines broad region electromagnetic spectrum, spanning from submillimetre visual band. Some recent developments various branches astrophysics provide us with an unprecedented view low rays. Accurate measurements constraints intensity such particles are now available both for very local medium distant clouds. interpretation these data is currently debated, emerging picture calls reassessment scenario invoked describe origin and/or transport Galaxy.

Cosmic Ray Ionization of the Interstellar Medium

We consider a cosmic ray spectrum that is a power law in momentum down to a cutoff and derive a lower cutoff corresponding to Ekin ∼ (30− 60) MeV from the observed ionization rates in nearby diffuse clouds. While the real spectra of cosmic rays may not be so simple, we argue that one expects a substantial change in the spectra at such energies and that, at first approximation, a power law spect...

The Isotopic Composition of the Anomalous Low-energy Cosmic Rays

We present new observations of the isotopic composition of low-energy He, C, N, 0, and Ne nuclei. The observations cover the energy interval from ,...., 5 to 30 MeV per nucleon, the energy range where the "anomalous cosmic ray" fluxes of He, N, 0, and Ne have been observed. We compare the isotopic composition of the anomalous cosmic rays with that of higher-energy galactic cosmic rays in an eff...

Spallation dominated propagation of Heavy Cosmic Rays and the Local Interstellar Medium ( LISM )

Measurements of ultra heavy nuclei at GeV/n energies in the galactic cosmic radiation address the question of the sources (nucleosynthetic sand r-processes). As such, the determination of CR source abundances is a promising way to discriminate between existing nucleosynthesis models. For primary species (nuclei present and accelerated at sources), it is generally assumed that the relative propa...

Low-energy break in the spectrum of Galactic cosmic rays.

Measurements of the low-energy spectrum of Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) by detectors on or near Earth are affected by solar modulation. To overcome this difficulty, we consider nearby molecular clouds as GCR detectors outside the Solar System. Using γ-ray observations of the clouds by the Fermi telescope, we derive the spectrum of GCRs in the clouds from the observed γ-ray emission spectrum. We ...

Galactic Cosmic Rays in the Local Interstellar Medium: Voyager 1 Observations and Model Results

Since 2012 August Voyager 1 has been observing the local interstellar energy spectra of Galactic cosmic-ray nuclei down to 3MeV nuc and electrons down to 2.7 MeV. The H and He spectra have the same energy dependence between 3 and 346MeV nuc, with a broad maximum in the 10–50MeV nuc range and a H/He ratio of 12.2 ± 0.9. The peak H intensity is ∼15 times that observed at 1 AU, and the observed lo...
